Adornments: Jewellery

Among the jewellery, rings are significant and were worn both by men and women in Lucus Augusti. Rings identified their owner and at the same time they were used either to seal documents or as amulets. These show the taste for different shapes and the use of carved gemstones (sard, carnelian, onyx …), some of them are admirable for their beautiful design and carving. The carved motives are very varied, most of them allegorical or mythological, such as the representation of Fortuna.

Other motives, such as animals, could have either symbolic or apotropaic meaning (for turning away harm). Less common are gold and silver rings, there is an example where Christian influence can be observed, having some fish figures carved in it.
