| Epigraphy: Funerary |
|
The locations of tombs in the necropolis were marked externally by astone with a funerary inscription, and it is considered a "funerary monument". This inscription contains the information that allows us to identify the deceased. In addition to the consecratory formulas, mainly the invocations to the deities Manes (D.M.S.), as protective deities of the deceased, the name of the deceased is also written, their social and family status, age, etc. As a consequence of the different types of burial and period, the commemorative monuments can be steles, ara (altar) or funeral plates. A characteristic of Lugo funerary epigraphy is that aras or funerary altars are more common than steles and plates; the opposite is the case in surrounding areas and other North-eastern cities.
