Among the most common daily activities we highlight the tasks relating to cloth and sewing, mainly carried out by women, regardless of their social status. The huge amount of loom weights found during the excavations, as well as the diversity of shapes and weights imply the existence of a yarn and fabrics cottage industry. For this purpose vertical loom weights made of wood were used. The weights (pondera), made of pottery or stone, were attached to the end of the threads to keep them taut, to facilitate the task of weaving. The use of wheels (fusaiolas) was also frequent, small pierced discs strung on a wooden shaft that served to hold skeins, which once were wound, when yarn was obtained. Wooden frames or double eyed bronze needles were used to weave. The main raw materials were wool for warm and common garments, and linen more convenient for lingerie and fine garments. Bronze or bone needles were used for sewing. We have found many different types and sizes. |
