During the Roman Empire, the art of glass making improved and spread, thanks to the invention of glassblowing which allowed production to be much faster. In Lugo, we have a wide variety of glass, but due to the high degree of fragmentation is very difficult to assign them to type. During the first two centuries a small number and variety of forms are found, generally originating in Italy or in areas of Italian influence (valley of Rhône in Switzerland). The characteristic examples of this period are the quadrangular bottles and the so-called ribbed bowls; let's not forget the huge amount of window glass, in many cases used inthe bathhouses. During the High Empire, glass becomes a low cost and very common object, made using a different production technique. The techniqueused is based on glassblowing, but generally of lower quality, containing numerous bubbles and stretch marks. The main colours are olive and yellow, with clear glass taking ona milky appearance. The decoration is now richer, and special glass starts to appear scribed with figures. |
